Napa County officials had become so accustomed to crumbs when it comes to Napa River flood project funding that it is hard to imagine the feast Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, announced this week.

More than $99 million in federal stimulus money has been set aside for the project, setting immediately into motion work on what was expected to take years just to fund: Raise and relocate railroad tracks in the heart of town, complete flood safety work on Napa Creek and design the critical bypass channel for the Napa River at the oxbow.
