The granddaughter of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower

endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president, saying the Illinois senator can forge bipartisan cooperation and ``encourage ordinary Americans to stand straight again.''

Susan Eisenhower, writing on the Washington Post opinion pages today, said Obama is best positioned to ``bring about a sense of national unity and change'' and can attract the crossover voters from the Republican Party to make it happen. It was Obama's first endorsement by a prominent Republican.
